The US pharmaceutical industry has adopted a patent system, which has enabled each company to compensate for its investment in R&D by monopolizing its market for a certain period of time. However, this system has a problem. Companies tend to retain their monopoly for a long time by repeatedly applying for new patents on products which are marginally modified. This leads to patients’ significant financial burden. Given this situation, some politicians are striving to pass a law which won’t approve patents on slightly modified products. However, the pharmaceutical industry, which is more affluent and influential than the reformers, are opposed to the reform.

Some people may argue that the Japanese government should focus on the domestic investment. However, I believe that the Japanese government should give more money as aid to foreign countries.

First, it is a humanitarian responsibility to offer aid to those who are faced with starvation in developing countries. People cannot choose the country they are born. Hence, affluent people should financially support impoverished people from a humanitarian point of view.

Second, global warming can be addressed by supporting foreign countries. Developed countries have developed by emitting a lot of greenhouse gases in the past century but don’t emit a large amount of such gases in this century. Hence, in order to deal with global warming, it may be a wise decision to curtail the emission of greenhouse gases in developing countries. To realize this, developed countries should support developing countries technically.

Third, aid to foreign countries may contribute to world peace. Some wars are caused in impoverished countries, where residents are fighting for wealth. If the Japanese government can stop wars by offering aid, it will not only contribute to world peace but also be highly acclaimed all over the world.

In conclusion, the Japanese government’s aid to foreign countries is imperative to make the world better. It can contribute to addressing worldwide problems such as poverty, global warming and wars.
