We may not use fossil fuels at all in the next century but fossil fuels will be the world’s main source of energy in the coming decades.
First, energy companies prefer thermal power generation to new power generation such as solar power generation because of the affordability of fossil fuels. If an inexpensive way to generate power is invented, it will take the place of thermal power generation. However, it will take more than decades for that kind of method to be developed.
Second, thanks to the technology development, many fossil fuels have recently been found and will not be exhausted for a few hundred years. Therefore, the supply of fossil fuels will be stable at least until the end of this century.
Third, after the huge earthquake hit Japan in 2011, more and more Japanese people think that they should depend less on nuclear power generation. This means that we will depend more on thermal power generation.
In conclusion, we will take advantage of fossil fuels due to its cost, availability and safety. However, one problem of fossil fuels is that carbon dioxide is emitted when they are burned. Therefore, we shouldn’t rely heavily on fossil fuels and develop clean and inexpensive energy source.
